Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a life-threatening infection or reaction to injuries of the lung that typically occurs in people who are very ill and are already hospitalized. It causes impaired gas exchange with the release of inflammatory mediators, leading to inflammation, hypoxemia, and possible multi-organ failure. The mortality rate of ARDS is 25-40%, and those who do survive have the potential for permanent lung damage.
